Contact Lenses

Contact lenses have changed dramatically over the past decade.  Almost all lenses are now designed to be replaced on a regular basis, and are far more breathable than in the past.  Because of this they are far more comfortable, healthier for your eyes and better for your wallet.  We can now provide top-brand daily disposable contact lenses for less than $0.90c per lens - clear vision and no cleaning hassles for less than half the cost of a cup of coffee per day!

At Cassidy Eyecare we are experienced in contact lens fitting, and are able to advise on the best lens option for you.  Disposable contact lenses are now available in designs which correct astigmatism, and in multifocal designs for people who need progressive spectacle lenses.  We also fit rigid gas-permeable (RGP) lenses for people with keratoconus or other difficult prescriptions.

A good contact lens fit begins with a thorough eye examination to ensure your prescription is up-to-date, and to rule out any pre-existing conditions that may interfere with successful contact lens wear.  We will take a number of measurements and observations, and discuss your contact lens options.  In most cases you will be able to try on a lens at your initial consultation.  We will also give you detailed one-on-one instruction on how to insert and remove your lenses, and how to clean and care for them.  Generally we like you to take the lenses home and test-drive them for a week, and we review your eyes and experiences at a second visit.  Occasionally we may need to adjust the lens material or fitting at this visit, and we continue to review your eyes until we are both happy that the optimal result has been achieved.  This careful process ensures that our clients success rate with contact lenses is very high.

Types of Contact Lenses

Daily Disposable Lenses

More and more of our contact lens clients are switching to this modality of lens wear, as it provides the ultimate in comfortable, safe and low-hassle lens wear.  Daily disposable lenses are ideal for people with allergies or sensitive eyes, as replacing the lens every day eliminates the build-up of allergenic material on the lens.  Because no cleaning solution is required, it also removes the possibility of solution hypersensitivity.  A clean, fresh lens everyday is the best way of keeping your eyes white and healthy during lens wear.  As the lenses stay fresh in their sealed blister pack for over a year, they are perfect for people who want to wear lenses part-time.  We also strongly recommend daily disposables as the best lens choice for young people - if they can't/won't clean their room, they probably can't/won't clean their contact lenses.

Monthly/Fortnightly Disposable Lenses

As the name suggests, these lenses have a scheduled replacement time of two to four weeks.  They require daily cleaning and storing in a special contact lens solution.  If we can't get your prescription in a daily lens, these are our next stop.

Lenses for Overnight Wear

Some monthly & fortnightly lenses have been approved for overnight wear.  While some people are able to do this successfully, the risk of contact lens related problems increases significantly overall.  Because of this, people who choose to sleep in their lenses require more frequent follow-up care to ensure their eyes are coping with the extra stress of overnight wear.  We would always suggest daily disposable lenses as a safer alternative.

Rigid Gas Permeable Lenses (RGP)

Although the vast majority of lenses fitted these days are soft disposable lenses, RGP lenses have a number of advantages.  They generally provide greater breathability than soft lenses, and are usually cheaper over a period of a couple of years.  RGP lenses are great for complicated prescriptions and tricky corneas, and may be the only practical option to provide clear vision for conditions like keratoconus. RGP lenses require more practitioner skill & experience to fit than soft contact lenses, and take a bit longer to get used to wearing.  Fortunately, we've fitted hundreds of eyes with RGP lenses, and can give you good advice on whether RGP lenses are the best choice for you.
